Section 2: Calculating Percentage Yield


At the end of a reaction and after isolation, purification etc of the product, the final mass (or volume) of the isolated product will probably be less than the theoretical yield.

This final mass (or volume) of the product is called the ACTUAL YIELD.
In experiments, it is useful to know what proportion of the theoretical yield you obtained. This proportion is expressed as a percentage - as shown below:
Percentage Yield =        Actual Yield        x 100 %
Theoretical Yield
