Calculating Chemical Yields

Objectives

After finishing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. describe what the theoretical yield of a reaction means
  2. state an equation linking percentage yield, actual yield and theoretical yield
  3. calculate how much product - in theory - can be produced from given amounts of reactants (theoretical yield)
  4. calculate what proportion of the theoretical yield was actually produced in a reaction (percentage yield)
  5. calculate how much reactant you need in order to produce a particular amount of product

Prerequisites

You need to know the following: the basic units of mass and volume; the relationship between number of moles, RMM and mass and how to do the associated calculations; how to do calculations involving molarities. You will probably need a calculator.
