Introduction To Antagonists: Theory

Competitive Antagonism: Mode Of Action

How do competitive antagonists work? A competitive antagonist interacts with the same receptors as the agonist. It will therefore block some of the receptors. Fewer receptors can therefore be occupied by the agonist and the effect of the agonist will be reduced. A good example of competitive antagonism is the effect of tubocurarine on the response to acetylcholine at motor end-plates in skeletal muscle.
