Introduction To Antagonists: Theory

Use Of Terminology

At the moment, different textbooks define the following terms differently:
  • Irreversible, competitive antagonist
  • Non-competitive antagonist
  • Physiological antagonist

When you come across these terms, you should check how the source defines these terms as it will affect how you interpret the given information.

The following page shows the definitions of these three terms as used in this activity. You should compare the three definitions and clarify to yourself what the difference is between the three types of antagonism.

Then when you read textbooks, you should be able to tell what sort of antagonism the book is referring to - and adjust your use of terminology eg does the book use "non-competitive" for "physiological" antagonism?
