Objectives

After finishing this activity, you should be able to:

1. define mole fraction
2. derive an equation useful for mole fraction calculations, from the definition of mole fraction
3. do calculations where the concentration is expressed as a mole fraction including calculating:
   1. the mole fraction for a component
   2. the number of moles of a component present in a specified amount of a preparation
   3. the total number of moles of components present in a specified amount of a preparation

Prerequisites

You will need to know the basic units of volume and mass, the relationship between moles and RMM and how to do the associated calculations, and, what molarity is and how to do molarity calculations. You will probably need a calculator.
