Guidelines For The Safe Use Of Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is a highly complex type of therapy, full of potential risks and hazards. For these reasons staff involved in chemotherapy should follow the following guidelines:

Guideline 1

Only clinicians who are experienced in the use of chemotherapy should prescribe for and manage the patient.

Only a consultant or specialist registrar should be allowed to prescribe intrathecal chemotherapy.

Guideline 2

The patient's laboratory parameters should be assessed before and at regular intervals during the treatment cycle and for as long as is necessary afterwards.

Guideline 3

All staff involved should have received appropriate training and certification, undertaken a formal induction course and demonstrated their competence. Staff involved with intrathecal chemotherapy must be included on their workplace's "Register Of Designated Personnel".

For all requirements of training, education and induction please refer to the activity "National Guidance On The Safe Administration Of Intrathecal Chemotherapy".

Guideline 4

Patients should be adequately educated about their chemotherapy treatment. They should know about side effects and self care management and about the proper handling and disposal of chemotherapeutic agents.

Guideline 5

Chemotherapeutic agents and all materials used in their preparation and administration should be prepared, handled and disposed of safely.
