• Some side effects such as myelosuppression may be potentially life threatening and may require treatment to be terminated or suspended.
• Others such as nausea and vomiting have a major effect on the patient's status.
• Side effects therefore have to be predicted and their management built into the treatment plan. Often they will be major factors in the design of treatments.
