Section 3: Calculating the Volume of Product
If you know the % v/v of a component and you know how many millilitres of that component you have, you can calculate what volume of product is involved.

A volume of Alkaline Gentian Mixture BP 1988 contains 2.5 ml of Concentrated Gentian Infusion which is at a concentration of 10 % v/v? What is the total volume of Mixture present?

Ratio Solution
A 10 % v/v Concentrated Gentian Infusion means
that there are:
that there are:
10 ml of Infusion in 100 ml of Mixture
Thus: 2.5 ml of Infusion are in 2.5 x 100 ml of Mixture
10
10
2.5 ml of Infusion are in 25 ml of Mixture
The total volume of Mixture present is 25 ml.
Equation Solution
The equation that you can use is:
% v/v = volume of component x 100 (ml/100 ml)
volume of product
volume of product
which rearranges to:
volume of product = volume of component x 100 ml
% v/v
% v/v
volume of Mixture = 2.5 x 100 ml
10
volume of Mixture = 25 ml
The total volume of Mixture present is 25 ml.
10
volume of Mixture = 25 ml
The total volume of Mixture present is 25 ml.
